Visit to the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences
Students and lecturers of the Institute of Languages and Cultures of Central Europe from our faculty visited the archives and the archaeological park of the Institute of Archaeology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Nitra on Friday, 2 May 2024.
The archives and the archaeological park are located near Martinský vrch (Martin’s Hill). On this site, there has been a military camp since the 1800s, which could accommodate 300 permanent and 1200 temporary soldiers. Some of the buildings are used by the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and have recently been renovated. It currently houses a collection of archaeological material from all over Slovakia. The site is also home to many other archaeological objects, usually on loan to exhibitions and museums. Several archaeological finds require special protection, care and storage. During the detailed and very interesting guided tour, the topics covered included how archaeology is done, what archaeologists do, what to do if you happen to come across a rare find, and how the results of archaeologists’’ work can be linked to tourism, culture or creative industries.
