An international conference entitled "The Present and Future of an Identity Rooted in the Past" took place from 21 to 24 June 2023.  The event was organised by the University of Pannonia in Veszprém, in the European Capital of Culture 2023.

The conference featured more than 100 lectures and from the Faculty of Central European Studies of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra was attended by prof. Mgr. Ildikó Vančo, PhD., Dr. habil. Dr. István Kozmács, PhD., Mgr. Dániel Illés, and Mgr. Viktória Gergelyová, PhD.

During the conference, Ildikó Vančo and István Kozmács presented the findings of their research on the impact of Hungarian language variations on the formation of Hungarian identity in Slovakia. Their study was based on the perspectives of prospective Hungarian language and literature teachers. The presentation by Ildikó Vančo and Dániel Illés focused on the relationship between Hungarian language variants in Slovakia and the standard Hungarian language variants in Hungary. They examined the opinions of Hungarian high school students in Slovakia regarding regional Hungarian language variations. One of their main objectives was to determine the extent to which these high school students consider the knowledge of dialects, which play a significant role in their community's identity, as an advantage. Additionally, they investigated the respondents' self-reported proficiency in their regional dialect and their perceptions of dialect usage in different speech situations. Viktória Gergelyová analyzed the cultural aspects of the MagyarOK foreign language textbook, which is also used for teaching Hungarian as a foreign language to beginners at the Faculty of Central European Studies. Her presentation explored the elements of identity, cultural diversity, and the inclusion of authentic materials in this textbook. She focused on examining the presence of identity-related elements, cultural diversity, and authentic materials within the MagyarOK textbook.
