The interactive learning about the past in the future
On February 19, 2025, Dr. Rivka Rosenberg from Bar-Ilan University in Israel visited the Faculty of Central European Studies of the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra with a lecture on ‘Unleashing the Potential: Revolutionizing Holocaust Education Through the 21st Century’ as part of the Erasmus+ mobility. Her parents are also involved in this topic, which added a personal dimension to the lecture.
Dr. Rosenberg's lecture on the pedagogical aspects of the topic was well-received. The interactive format encouraged student participation, fostering an engaging environment for learning. The integration of dialogue and mobile-accessible interactive tasks further enhanced the interactive nature of the lecture, allowing students to actively engage with the material and contribute to the ongoing discussion.
The lecture was conducted in English, a language with which the students were largely familiar, as most of them had sufficient language skills to comprehend and actively engage with the material. In addition to the pedagogical aspects of the topic, Dr. Rosenberg addressed the sensitive issue of Holocaust trauma, which continues to impact many individuals, particularly in relation to family experiences and historical background. She discussed how these traumas affect not only individuals but also entire communities and emphasized the importance of processing these difficult topics in contemporary society. Her lecture left a strong impression on the students and opened important questions related to historical memory and its influence on the present by pointing out the parallel between the Holocaust and the current conflict in Israel, reflecting on the story of the Bibas family, whose death has become a kind of memento of the October 2023 kidnappings in Israel.
Dr. Rivka Rosenberg's lecture centred on innovative teaching methods, particularly the incorporation of VR (virtual reality) technology and other interactive technologies that have the potential to be implemented in the near or distant future.
